Molly Brown Turns 150 With A Birthday Celebration

Molly Brown (Margaret Tobin) was born on 18 July 1867,1 in Hannibal, Missouri, the daughter of John Tobin and Johanna Collins (2), both Irish immigrants. She had also become a founding member of the Denver Woman's Club, which advocated literacy, education, suffrage and human rights in Colorado and the US. Brown raised funds to build the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception as well as St Joseph's Hospital by the turn of the century.

She wanted to visit the Molly Brown House Museum in Denver. The Molly Brown House Museum doesn't allow photography in the museum. In 1894, the Browns moved to Denver, where their lavish home would eventually become the Molly Brown House Museum. This past week, my family took a trip out to Denver, Colorado for the first time.

In 1883 Margaret's half-sister, Mary Ann, married and moved to Leadville, Colorado, a prosperous silver mining town. That life changed in 1893, when J.J.—a mine superintendent—discovered gold in a claim owned by his employer, the Ibex Mining Company. Costumed tour guides take visitors through the 1889 Victorian home of one of Colorado's most colorful characters, the legendary Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Open for more than 47 years, the Museum serves over 50,000 people every year, including 10,000 youth, successfully achieving its mission to enhancing the city's unique identity by telling the story of Margaret Molly” Brown's activism, philanthropy and passion through educational programs, exhibits and stewardship.

Hours may vary and the museum is closed on major holidays, so contact the museum to confirm available tour times. The Molly Brown House is a museum dedicated to the legendary Margaret ‘Molly' Brown. Our guest is Jamie Melissa Wilms, Director of Education at the Molly Brown House Museum in Denver, Colorado.

Titanic Lifeboat #6, the lifeboat that Margaret was pushed onto, had room for many more passengers. The Molly Brown House Museum received Titanic $80,000 in NEH funding for the exhibition Molly Brown: The Biography of a Changing Nation," which opened June 23. There wasn't a lot of information throughout the house about the trip on the Titanic but I learned that there was so much more to The Unsinkable Molly Brown than just the Titanic.

Including more written descriptions or stories and placing them along the tour could help visitors who are more visual rather than auditory learners, as all of the information about Margaret, her house, and her life is spoken by the tour guides, except for a limited amount of pictures scattered throughout the house.
